The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a game of chance played by a group of people around a table. Players make bets and attempt to form the best five-card combination. If no one has the winning hand, the pot is split among the players.

The game can be played with more than seven players. It is usually played with chips. These are generally dark-colored. They can be worth two, four or five reds.

A player can place an ante in the pot. The ante amount varies from game to game. Some games allow players to put money into the pot voluntarily, while others require players to contribute to the pot before the deal.

Once the ante is placed, the dealer deals cards to all the players. Cards may be face up or face down.

Ties are broken by the high card. When multiple players have a high card, a high hand breaks ties.

If a tie is not broken, the next high card is the winner. Sometimes, a hand of four cards of the same suit is called a flush. Another type of hand is a straight, which consists of five cards in sequence.

A full house is a hand of three aces and two 6s. Three of a kind is a hand of three jacks. And a pair is a hand of two different pairs of cards.

In poker, betting is done in clockwise order. Each player has a certain number of chips, and must make an equal contribution to the pot. To raise, a player must match the previous bettor’s bet. After three raises, the bet is “capped.”

A player who checks is said to stay in, but doesn’t bet. When a player folds, he loses all his chips in the pot.
