Poker is a card game played with chips (representing money) and can be played by two or more players. The object is to win the pot, which is the total of all bets made during a hand. A player may make a bet by placing chips in the pot, raising an earlier bet, or folding his hand. A player may also “check,” meaning that he will not place any chips in the pot and will only act when it is his turn again.

A player can win a hand by having the highest-ranked combination of cards, or by bluffing by betting that his hand is superior and other players call his bet. He can also lose by calling a bet when his own hand is weak, or when other players have superior hands that he does not know about.

The word poker derives from the French noun poque, meaning ‘to cut’. The game was likely influenced by several vying games, including Belle, Flux & Trente-un (French, 17th – 18th centuries), Post & Pair (English, 18th century) and Brag (18th century to present).

A typical poker game includes multiple betting rounds. During the first round of betting, each player receives 2 hole cards. There is then another round of betting, initiated by mandatory bets called blinds placed in the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. The players then assess their opponents’ hands and decide whether to continue raising their bets or fold. Depending on the game rules, there may be one or more additional streets of betting.
